“Y” Mountain
One of the things we decided we wanted to do was hike the “Y” during Spring Break. We have wanted to do this ever since we moved to Springville. I remember driving to Springville with the kids the day we moved, pointed out the “Y” on the mountain by BYU and said that we were going to hike that and the kids were so excited! Here we are 2 1/2 years later finally doing it! I wanted to wait and do this with David but with his crazy schedule I just decided to make it happen! We left at 10:30 knowing it was going to be a hot hike since there is NO SHADE and the sun would be out. And it was hot. It only got to 60 degrees while we were out but it felt a lot hotter! The trail was way, WAY steeper than I thought! And I had NO idea how far it was. It is over 2 miles all up hill. The kids all surprised me. The ones who I thought would whine didn’t whine once! The ones who I thought would do awesome and love it, well, they had a harder time with it! Cameron and Alyssa beat us all up the hill. I think they ran up a lot of it. There are 13 switchbacks and after the 6th switch back they got tired of waiting for the slow group and went on ahead. Jason would take a few steps and fall down on his knees complaining about his legs hurting. We stopped a lot for water breaks! At the 9th switch back Melanie started complaining about her stomach hurting and feeling like she was going to throw up! But I was NOT turning around! When we saw the Y we also saw Cameron and Alyssa scooting down it. It was pretty steep! Jenna got a hole in her bum on her jeans from scooting down it. After overlooking the beautiful view (we could see 3 temples!) and congratulating ourselves on accomplishing something so hard we got out our snacks! I was so glad we brought those! The hike down took 1/2 the time it did to go up but it was hard in a different way! We had to be careful as we would slip many times with the loose gravel. We decided to celebrate with ice cream at the BYU creamery. The kids have never been there and that was a special treat for them! They all agreed that this was the most fun day so far of Spring Break. And we had gone to do other fun things like Nickel Mania and swam at a new pool with rock climbing and cliff jumping. I hope they always remember that in life the greatest rewards that they will ever receive will be the ones that they have to work the hardest for.
